THE OLD MARKET is home to the acclaimed period instrument orchestra, The Hanover Band. It is the venue for City Books at the Old Market, cultural lectures run by The Regency Society and a dazzling range of events and entertainment.
The Hanover Band was founded by Caroline Brown, Artistic Director of The Old Market. It has an international reputation for the excellence of its performances and recordings of 18th and 19th century music. The Band, which plays in concert halls and festivals throughout the world, also has a long-term strategy to bring musical excellence to the South-East, and has developed community links through an extensive education programme.
City Books at The Old Market is Brighton and Hove’s continuous festival celebrating literature and the written word. Famous names have included: Tony Benn, Will Self, Jamie Oliver, Julian Clary, Naomi Klein, Martin Bell and Michael Wood. Authors read from their books, discuss their work and answer questions from the audience before signing copies of their books in the bar.
The Regency Society is the oldest conservation and amenity society in Brighton & Hove. It is a registered charity which campaigns for the preservation of the historic architecture of this city and for new developments which will improve the quality of life here.
